Tamil Nadu Government Transfers Idol Theft Cases to CBI : In a controversial move, the Tamil Nadu government transferred idol theft cases in various temples across the state to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from the Idol Wing Crime Investigation Department(CID) led by court-appointed IG A G Ponn Manickavel. Tamil Nadu government told the Madras High Court that it has taken a policy decision. TN Government and argued in the court that the team headed by Inspector General (IG) Pon Manickavel had not submitted even one report. The order issued by State Home Secretary Niranjan Mardi, reasoned that the cases were “very important and significant that some of the idols are antique, dating back to thousands of years.” The government order was passed based on the recommendations of the Additional Director General of Police, Economic Offences Wing Chennai. Few days back, Madras High Court pulled up the Tamil Nadu (TN) government recently for "deliberate delay" in implementing its orders pertaining to the safety of idols in temples.
Idol theft cases Tamilisai Soundararajan vs D Jayakumar : Tamil Nadu fisheries minister D Jayakumar said, Idol Theft cases have lot of international complications. BJP state president Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan said the transfer of cases only indicated that the state government did not have faith on Pon Manickavel. This move might allow the real culprits to go scot-free. DMK working president M K Stalin said, “The government should allow the Idol Wing CID to complete its investigation and bring the truth out instead of transferring the cases to CBI”. Three days back, M Kavitha, Additional Commissioner of the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department (HR&CE) was arrested for misappropriation of gold in idols. Pon Manickavel is the Inspector General Police of the idol wing in Tamil Nadu. He investigated many stolen ancient idols cases and is a big inspiration to many young cops in the state.
